Our Purpose

Mental Health Kokua has been dedicated to assisting seriously mentally ill adults realize optimal recovery and functioning in the community since its inception.  The impact of this dedication is evidenced in our vision through the greater community acceptance of individuals with mental illness in Hawaii, and in the cost savings to the public because of a service delivery system that is community based, and focused on social wellness.  We are distinguished by our:

• Owned and operated affordable community housing resources,

• Delivery of recovery-oriented best practice services

• Enduring commitment to the population we serve,

• Long history of innovation and leadership in the psycho-social   rehabilitation field, and

• Aloha based service delivery system that honors diversity, is culturally sensitive, and includes highly trained staff who relate well to those we serve.

Our Principles

The principles we adhere to in achieving our goals include:

• Rehabilitation interventions that build on the strengths of each person and facilitate the process of recovery and the re-integration into community life.

• Services that are delivered in a culturally competent manner and are integrated, coordinated, accessible, and available as long as needed.

• Services and assessments designed to address the unique and diverse recovery needs of each individual, consistent with the individual’s cultural values and norms.

• Services that are normalized, community centered, culturally sensitive, and encompass the whole life of the individual.

Involvement and partnership of persons receiving services and family members in operations and evaluation.
